Hello Flor,

That worked! I know have the section symbol being referred to as the word
section in all of the appropriate places. Thank you so much for all of the
assistance.

Take care,

John

Please Note: You will then need to make a JAWS Dictionary entry to speak
the value of ANSI character 167, by replacing ANSI167 with the word
'section' without the quotes. JAWS should then say section when it comes
across the section sign. If preferred, you can do this without going into
the Configuration manager, etc., by highlighting the ANSI167 character
(where you know the section sign is), and by adding it to your JAWS
dictionary entries list. (JAWS Dictionary Manager) Insert+d; Default
Dictionary then ctrl+shift+d; ctrl+a for Add; then add in the ANSI167 or
section sign. then Tab to Replace and there type section. ctrl+s to save
your change, and exit.

The JAWS Configuration Manager file (the .jcf file for any program opened)
can be accessed by insert+6. The default .jcf can then be reached by
ctrl+shift+d, which is also a default JAWS keystroke in other JAWS utilities
for other default files.

Right: Do not let the detail be a barrier.

1. Go into your Configuration manager, either application or default,
whichever you would prefer.

2. Press Alt+s for Set Options.

3. Press the letter g to bring up the Graphics & Symbols dialogue.

4. The first item there refers to ANSI Character Verbosity. This is what
you will change. Arrow down from "None" to any of the other values. Try
the "Type Echo, Say Char Spell Word" option by arrowing to it.

5. Having done these things, shift-tab twice to the ok button, and hit
enter.

6. Now you can save your change with ctrl+s, or you can alt-F4 from the
configuration manager and press y to save the change(s).

Hello,

The section symbol is definitely what i want JFW to recognize and I was
unable to find the graphics verbosity menu in the config manager. Can you
walk me through this like I am reading a JFW for dummies book.

Take care,

John

Try the ANSI Character Verbosity switch in the Graphics & Symbols dialogue
in the friendly config manager, Set Options, Graphics & Symbols. By
default, the verbosity is set to say no ANSI. (ANSI being an extended
character set that includes non-English alphabetical characters.) the
section sign is ANSI167 ANSI160 § sign. (I may be a little out on that,
but ANSI167 is the main symbol, and then a press of spacebar seems to
produce ANSI160.) In the verbosity dialogue you might want to choose "Say
char, spell word". You can choose any of them except none. HTH.

John,

I just realized your question implies you're not finding this list, and I
should have been clearer. By "insert-4," I'm referring to the 4 on the
number row above the letters on the keyboard. I'm not referring to the
numpad.

As I said in the message I just sent, I find I can access this feature while
within a variety of applications.

Hello Adrian,

I have sent an email to FS and will let you know what they say. In the
meantime, when you hit insert f4, are you in a word processing application,
such as, WordPerfect or word?

Take care,

John

Hi, everyone. I sent this message at about 6:30 last night, EST, but it
hasn't turned up in the list, as a fellow lister confirmed. I hope it's not
a repeat for any of you.

John,

I remember I once tricked JAWS into saying the section sign. However, I've
just been experimenting in the JAWS dictionary manager, only to find JAWS
doesn't recognize that it's on a character. The JAWS graphics labeler
doesn't recognize it as a graphic, at least in WordPerfect.

Curiously, the section sign does appear in the symbols list you get by
pressing insert-4. Open up that file and type an s, and you will be taken
right to it.

I've been testing this in both 6.2 and 8.

Someone on the list may also have tricked JAWS into speaking the symbol and
remembers how they did it. Otherwise, it would be worth an email to FS tech
support.

If you get an answer, please let us all know.

Adrian

Hello All,

I have a different punctuation question. I do a lot of legal reading and
there is an s like symbol for section and i was told that it was in an
earlier version of JFW. I believe it was 7.0, but cannot say for sure. When
JFW reads a code or statute section with this symbol, it reads over it as if
the symbol was not there. Is there a way to either, one, find this symbol in
the JFW menu choices, or two, select the symbol in a document and add it to
the punctuation symbols?

As always, I will greatly appreciate your help.

Take care,

John
