Hi

The problem you experience is related to the fact that if a computer is
booted then JAWS is running as a Windows service. Then JAWS is speaking
not only when a user is logged in, but also at the login screen, screen
to switch user accounts, or when the screen saver is active. However, as
soon as JAWS is stopped the first time (because one sighted user might
not want JAWS under his account) and started again (using for instance
the JAWS icon on the desktop), JAWS is then running as normal application
under this user account. This means if the screen saver is activated or
one wants to switch user accounts, JAWS is no longer speaking.

The obvious solution is to this problem is that when JAWS is started it
is always started as service and not as application. This can be
accomplished
by changing the JAWS icon to run the "net start jfwservice". We have
for convinience also setup the Ctrl+Alt+J hotkey to run this command.

However, we have experienced that when using this feature extensively
(i.e. switching users, other users taking off JAWS and then starting
again as service with Ctrl+Alt+J), then on very rare occassions JAWS
is started as service (can be verified from the list of running services),
but JAWS is not speaking. In these cases it then helps to start JAWS
both as service and as application. This again has in rare cases the
effect that two instances of JAWS are speaking, i.e. like an echo. But
at least have two JAWS speaking in few rare cases then none. To accomplish
starting JAWS both as service and application, we have linked the JAWS
icon and the Ctrl+Alt+J hotkey to a batch file with this content:

   @echo off
rem Start JAWS as service (only then it works at the login screen)
   net start jfwservice
rem Also now start JAWS as an application (seems necessary, otherwise
rem if JAWS is taken off it won't start again and won't speak in some
   rem cases)
   "c:\Program Files\Freedom Scientific\JAWS\8.0\jfw.exe".

Subject: Screen saver and JAWS

Hi all,
I've noticed an observation with JAWS and Windows XP. My father's machine
has multiple accounts set up, which is fair enough as it's a family machine.
The screen saver comes on after 10 minutes, however when I press a key to
get out of the screen saver and choose the user, JAWS doesn't want to speak
at all. It was so bad that I had to force it off and turn it back on again
to get it running again. I seem to remember this is a Windows XP bug that
was fixed in Vista, but can someone verify this for me please? The screen
saver in question is the default Windows XP one. In case you need it, my
father's machine is a Dell Dimentions Ins2400. To resolve this, I set it to
"(none)" in display properties. Thanks!
