Cher, I don't know what to tell you. The OE scripts haven't been named
anything like that since the initial Jaws 5.0. I have pasted the
information from the what's new in Jaws 5 section of the Jaws help.
Try running the script manager and going to the file menu and opening the
file called
Outlook Express 5-6.jss. Also check help, about in the jaws window (or
press insert control V in the jaws window) and verify what version of Jaws
you are using.
Aliases for all JAWS Configuration Type Files
Aliases are generally created to make things more understandable. For
example, instead of using the name BrowseUI for the name of configuration,
script, or key map files we now use Internet Explorer 5 and 6 as an alias.
This makes it much easier to find the files for the various applications
supported by the

Debbie- I'm using 5.0.844. The only option which starts with 's' (after
pressing control-L) is is "select a link". I'm using OE6 and the
titlebar says "JAWS script manager (OE5-6.jss).

Cher, what version of Jaws are you using?
When you press insert 0, say the title with insert T.
Does it say
Jaws Script Manager - Outlook Express 5-6.jss.
Then press control L.
You should hear script list, list box.
Then press S.
You should hear SayFocusedWindow.
If you press S again, or you down arrow once, you should be on
SayHighlightedText.

Dear Debbie-

Sorry, I can't find one item in your directions.

I'm able to follow the steps in this part...
In OE, press insert 0. This will open the OE scripts.
Press control L for the script list.

but can't locate this step...
Press S until you hear SayHighlightedText, then hit enter.
This will place you in the script.

(From the items already in the list, it looks like there are some
blank
spaces in front of the ';' and that the ';' is two spaces in front of
the particular item. Perhaps this part does not matter though?
Then you need to find the line that I said to comment out by putting a
semicolon in front of it. It is pretty far down, about 25 or 30 lines
probably.
It is down in the section of the script that has a comment that talks
about
if IsMessagesList (hwnd) then ;this block is to say "Unread message"
but not
"read message" based on bolded text in message list view.
You can also do a find (control F) and look for part of that comment
to
find
it.

Debbie- Yes, JAWS 5. I'm in the .jsm file- is that the right one? I
can only find the following lines:
msg_UnreadMessage_L = "Unread message ",

msg_UnreadMessage_S = "Unread",

Is this what you are talking about? and do I comment out both lines?

Thanks so much for your good input and ready knowledge!
Cher

Are you using Jaws 5? Yes, this is coming from the script and it
doesn't
rely
on the graphic label anymore. It determines read or unread based on
the
attribute (and whiter it is bold or not).
You want to comment out a line (put a ; in front of) a line in the
script
named SayHighlightedText.
The l ine is just about in the middle of the script.

SayFormattedMessage (ot_screen_message, msg_UnreadMessage_L,
msg_UnreadMessage_S)

Dear List,

My OE6 says "UnRead Message" (4 whole syllables) and is not
cooperating
with my efforts to silence it. I prefer to hear only the graphic for
the 'read' messages; which I have successfully labeled. However, even
though I deleted the graphic which is two spaces before the sender's
name on one of the unread messages, OE continues to say "unread
message". Is this coming from somewhere other than the graphic- e.g.
a
script or something?
