I have been quiet for some time about the version 5.0 video bug.
I too have had several versions of JFW, though not before 4.0). Version
5.0 is the only one that has had problems like you are describing and
others.
Most of the time it is easy to solve the problem by unloading JFW 5.0
and loading 4.51. Yes, on the same computer, running the same video
driver, in the same program, and in the same menu. JFW4.51 will work
perfectly where 5.0 leaves you hopelessly lost.
The strangest thing is that though several of us have discussed this
(probably until some of you are sick of it), technical support at
Freedom Scientific professed to be ignorant of any such problem. I WAS
ASTOUNDED!!!
I was advised by technical support at Freedom Scientific that just
discussing it on this list does not necessarily mean that Freedom
Scientific will ever know about the problem. Indeed, I was encouraged
to have all of you who have encountered the 5.0 video bug to let Freedom
Scientific know.
After my first complaint email about 5 or 6 months ago (which was never
answered), I sent another (about two weeks ago). After about a week, I
received a call from "Problem Escalations," or something like that.
I mentioned my first message and the shower of complaints about the 5.0
video bug that has peppered this list for months.
As I said, technical support at Freedom Scientific claimed to be unaware
that JFW had been seriously crippled with its 5.0 release.
I did a complete uninstall, delete of the directory, and reinstall with
Freedom Scientific technical support on the line.
The problem seemed to improve, for a time, but the problems are back.
I intend to call Freedom Scientific again on Monday.
The moral of the story is that Freedom Scientific programmers may indeed
fix things that aren't broken (as was done with version 5.0), but they
most certainly cannot fix something that is really broken if they don't
know about it.
SO, PLEASE, PLEASE, PLEASE call technical support, send emails to
technical support, send carrier pigeons to technical support, or
otherwise let them know about the 5.0 video bug. If you are going to
one of the conventions, announce it with megaphones!
Otherwise, this mess in version 5.0 will never get fixed!!!!
P.s.
The problem seems to be limited to some systems. I was finally brave
enough to load it on my desktop, an IBM Think Center. It works fine on
that system, but it is a disaster on my IBM ThinkPad R-30.

I frequently experience the same exact scenario as you describe. Most of
the time unloading and reloading Jaws corrects the menu reading
problem but occasionally I even have to reboot.
I have used every version of Jaws for windows from version 1 through the

current version 5.00.844 and can honestly say that the current version
has
delt me more exasperation and grief than any other version!
