Glad you got it fixed! I'll have to make a note of where to find that
checkbox in the future.

Subject: Outlook marks unopened items as read was RE: SADLY, OUTLOOK HAS
SOMETHING MISSING!

Hi again, J. I did a little searching. I believe that I discovered how
to stop Outlook from marking my items as read even though all I do is
highlight them, not open them. I did the following:

On the Tools menu, click Options, and then control tab over to Other.
Tab down to the Preview Pane button and enter.
Then tab down to "Mark items as read when selection changes" and uncheck
this.
Tab down and enter on Okay and then Tab down to okay once more.

This seemed to have done the trick. I can scroll all over the place now
and my unread items remain marked as unread. Glad that mystery is
solved.

cool! now we know the cause. sheesh, I just can't find that option
though.
sorry. I've stumbled across it before but when you need to find it poof
it's
hiding somewhere else.

Hi J. You know what? That is exactly what has been happening. I just
tested your theory and you were absolutely correct. I've been
inadvertently highlighting my E-mail thus turning all my unread messages
in to read messages. I'll have to look for this setting in Outlook as
well and see if I can change it from doing this. Thanks so much for
pointing this out. If I can't, it's no bigg deal, actually.

If all of my messages are read then the status line only shows the
number of
items. There is a setting in outlook that will mark a message as read
if
you were highlighted on it but hadn't even opened it yet. maybe you're
scrolling through your messages or something and it's marking them as
being
read so your status line no longer shows unread messages? I've looked
and
looked but can't fine that option now. I know I've seen it before
though.

J

That confirms it. There must be something wacky with my Outlook
settings or something. It only tells me how many items there are. Very
strange.

Well that would be correct then. I use MS outlook 2000 on one machine
and
MS outlook 2002 on another machine. On both machines my status line
reads x
number of items and x number unread.

For me in ms outlook when I hit insert+num pad 3 it reads 2 messages and
=
1
unread when I had 2 messages and only read 1

For me, the status line only announces how many items I have in my In
Box and not how many are unread. This is in Outlook, though, and not
Outlook Express. I wonder if that could be the difference.

When I read the status line it tells me how many items, then how many
unread.

If you needed a count of how many unread messages (separate from how
many total messages), I guess you would have to change your current view
to just unread messages, get the count I described, then if you needed
to, go back to the view showing all messages.
I have mine sorted by subject and my show six items 5 unread. So I am
not sure why a user would have to do what you describe above. =3D20
