Outlook Express suddenly sluggish

I've found recently that my out exp has become sluggish at least for the first
couple of minutes. I read messages in the preview pane rather than opening
them. Deleting is very slow and when I up and down arrow, the keyboard feels
like a swing.
I recently upgraded to AVG 7. Could this have anything to do with it? I have
made no other changes.
