Becky,

Another thought. Look in Tools/options/other and explore the auto archive 
button. For now I recommend that you do not auto archive.

  Sorry for calling you Don in my previous post.

   

  By hitting F6 twice, I can go to a list of my folders.  

  I can arrow down to the folder I want, and after hitting Enter, find my 
messages.

  It's only in the Inbox folder, that my undeleted read messages disappear upon 
exiting Outlook.

   

  I never used Outlook 2003, so everything is new.  I used an old version of 
Eudora Light on my old computer.
