it's interesting that if you are reading a message in outlook express, not writing 1, jaws key+ctrl+left and right arrows is used to jump to the first and last element on the page respectively. How serious can they be about this. This of course leads me to wonder what happens when on the web, you encounter chunks that you need this keystroke set for. Would jaws key+left and right be sufficient? I think not for you but maybe for me since mine does work in writing in notepad andoe. Another thought on this since we are talking about writing, How about looking in word view to see what your lay out is. It should be set to normal and your zoom should be at 75 or 100%. ----- Original Message ----- From: <ptusing@xxxxxxxxxxxxx> To: <jfw@xxxxxxxxxxxxx> Sent: Saturday, March 27, 2004 4:40 AM Subject: Re: NumericDataSayNextAsSingleUnit WAS: read entire number fails in Notepad Hi, I spent hours testing with verification to clarify that 5.0884 reads inconsistently double reading some numbers while tripple reading others andthat 4.5 1 a version I prefer reads half the number skipping numbers after the decimal point. I only regret I did not copy in advance F s's claims on Freedom SCientific' site when JAWS 5 was first released tauting the feature to make reading of "financial data" their words.easy. Yesterday, I read 2000 numbers with visual verification. The overall accuracy rate of JAWS between the 2 versions was around 90-92%. Allthough 4.5 1 was harder to use, 5.0884 was quite inconsistent in how it read in Office X P. the inconsistency involved numbers like 1.23 2.3 4 3.45 .56 7.58 12 .65 etc due to the repetitions of same number which could be falsely assumed to be a totally "different" number located *to the right* when it was the number where JAWS was reading repeatedly in Office X P with 5.0884. Ever sinceI raised this issue and spoke with the F S representative inJune and wrote this list, I have heard from many people who use numbers to make a living who hoped for a solution. i met face to face with a representative of F S in July who told me that financial data would be read using the read entire number feature and I saw this claim on the F S site twice and foolishly did not save it for occasions likethis one. ----- Original Message ----- From: "Mickey Quenzer" <mickeyqu@xxxxxxxxxxx> To: <jfw@xxxxxxxxxxxxx> Sent: Saturday, March 27, 2004 12:45 AM Subject: Re: NumericDataSayNextAsSingleUnit WAS: read entire number fails in Notepad > Hello everyone: > I think that in all fairness, we need to clarify what this command was > designed to do. > What it was designed for was to allow you to skip long strings of numbers > like IP addresses with a single keystroke. > > For example, if you've added these new commands, you could read the line > > "My computer uses the ip address 192.168.135.3 to communicate with the > internet." > > as a single line, or you could use your next and previous word keys to get > to the number and then use the appropriate > "NumericDataSayNextAsSingleUnit" > OR > "NumericDataSayPriorAsSingleUnit" > key to skip the IP address. > > > This can be found on the JFW 5.0 page > http://www.freedomscientific.com/fs_products/software_jaws5fea.asp#newingeneral > under heading level 2 > New in General > > heading level 3 New Navigation Scripts Added > > > > New Navigation Scripts Added > > Two new commands have been added, which you can assign in Keyboard Manager. > The Scripts found in the default file are called: > NumericDataSayNextAsSingleUnit > And > NumericDataSayPriorAsSingleUnit > Long names, but here's the short of it: > If you have a long word filled with numbers and punctuation, such as an IP > address or stock quote, press one of these keystrokes to move forward or > backward > past the whole unit.
