Norton antivirus 2006 and MS Word 2000

Hello folks.
Two days ago, I put Norton Antivirus 2006 on my HP7040 laptop and have
noticed two things, both annoying. First, the machine now requires nearly 3
minutes to load, before less than a minute. Also, when clicking on a
filename for MS Word 2000, Word comes up but not the file, not until I go
into the window list and hit enter on MS Word and the file. In other words,
the file has been brought up but all I see initially is the horizontal
ruler.
Any tips about how to diminish what I assume to be the effects of Norton
Antivirus 2006?
