I'm using Jaws 5, and I agree that the new layout has been designed poorly, but
for a free service,
it isn't too bad.

I don't like having to shift-tab back to the send link, but I can live with
that.

As far as emptying folders, in Jaws 5, it'll tell you that the empty option, is
clickable, and you
can hit enter on it.

Having said all this, I really don't use the web site often enough to have
problems. I normally
check my hotmail with outlook express.

Overall, the web site is doable, but it definitely could have been designed a
lot better.

Hello listers,

Several of you responded to my original message by suggesting I upgrade to
JFW 5.0. I have the 5.0 CD, but due to the numerous bugs reported by JFW
list members, I have decided to wait for some patches before switching to
5.x.

Some of you have confused JFW 3.7 with 3.7U. I'm using 3.7U, which is far
less buggy than JFW 5.0.

Another list member asked what version of Internet Explorer I'm using. I'm
using version 5.5, which is the most recent version that is compatible with
JFW 3.7U.

Until a few days ago, I had no problems with accessing all aspects of
Hotmail. The problems I described are caused by Microsoft's "enhancement" of
Hotmail.

Somebody else wrote that they were going to switch their students to Yahoo
e-mail. Ha! Yahoo is even less accessible to JFW.

I'd like to know from JFW 5.0 users who have accessed Hotmail through their
browsers since Microsoft made the format changes, if they have encountered
the same problems I described in my previous message.

Only one of the problems might be fixed by upgrading to JFW 5.0 and IE 6,
and that would be the graphical "empty junkmail" control that replaced the
JFW-friendly button.

The other problems I described will not be fixed by JFW 5.0. They are design
flaws...er... "features" of the new Hotmail.
Regards,
Alan

Hello listers,

Have any of you that have a Hotmail account had problems with the latest
format of Hotmail? For example, if you go to the junkmail folder, there used
to be a button labeled "Empty junkmail folder." Now, however, there is no
such button, and they have replaced it with some text that reads, "Empty
Junkmail" and to the left of the text, there is a graphic. I'm using JFW
3.7U, and my attempts to route the JAWS cursor to the pc cursor so I can
click on that graphic are leaving me frustrated. I've only managed to do it
once out of several attempts.

Hotmail has also eliminated the convenient links that were displayed after
logging in. These links would tell you the number of messages in your inbox
without having to go to the inbox. Now you have no choice but to go there to
see if you've got messages.

Hotmail has also made sending messages more inconvenient. It used to have a
"Send" button that could be reached with a single tab after typing your
message. Now, you have to go back to the message header to click on the
send.

Bottom line? The "new and improved Hotmail" is a big step backwards in
screen-reader accessibility.
