Need Help Using Footnotes in Word

Hello,
Can anyone give me the basics on how to read and edit footnotes in an MS
Word 2002 document? I use JAWS 6.1.
I was given the document to revise. The footnotes appear at the bottom of
each page.
I can't tell where the footnotes end and the text resumes.
Also, I accidentally hit return at the end of a footnote and got an unwanted
blank line and lost the following footnote number. How do I get rid of the
blank line and get the missing footnote number back?
