Adrian,

Yep. Forgot that one, and I do it so automatically sometimes that I don't
even remember it.

Dave, don't forget insert-J, my preferred route. One simple command. And
then, when you press escape, JAWS scurries back into the system tray, as
you explained.

Tom,

Once you have JAWS running in your system tray, you can either access it
using the JAWS+f11 keystroke and arrow to JAWS, or simply press enter on the
JAWS icon on your desktop. This will bring up a context menu very similar to
the menus in the JAWS application window. Either way, once you complete any
modifications in JAWS, pressing escape will return it to the system tray.

However as I've indicated, if you're suffering from the same purported
memory leak as I am, running from the system tray does not solve that.

Let me know if you need more details on setting up a "Kill JAWS" icon on
your desktop for quick restart.

This is really helpful!

I'll definitely give it a try, and thanks also for the great explanation.

Tom,

As to the system tray, I couldn't imagine why someone told you not to do it
that way, as I find it a lot more convenient and JAWS is less intrusive,
when it's not hogging a place in the task bar and occupying a spot in the
"circle" when I Alt+Tab around looking for one of my open windows. I've had
it in the system tray since it was offered as an option. You set this by
launching JAWS, going to the options menu, then the basics dialog. Tab down
and you'll find it "launch JAWS from the system tray".

Then you'll need to close JAWS and reopen to put it there.

As to the long time with no reboots, I also have this problem. I chalk it up
to a proposed notion that JAWS has a memory leak and that after a long time
it just quits or hangs. In your case it may be triggered by JAWS gobbling
RAM, and using an application that consumes a large amount of your available
RAM, and thereby crowds out JAWS.

I have often promoted the idea of having a shortcut on the desktop (I call
it Kill JAWS) that can be easily found with the letter "K" that immediately
removes JAWS from memory using the taskkill executable. Then I wait a moment
and press Ctrl+alt+j to launch it again. I do this as often as a couple
times a day, when JAWS just gets cranky or quits altogether.

Shouldn't have to do this, but no real solutions are forthcoming from FS, so
that how I cope.

Yes, I think that is a fair statement--i.e. that it happens to me after not
having re-booted for a long time.

Regarding running Jaws from the system tray, can you tell me why I might
have been told not to do this, and how do I get Jaws to actually run from
the system tray?

Thanks!

Tom, inaddition to running from the system tray, question: Does this tend to
happen more often when you've not rebooted for along while?

As you suggest, I will re-check my settings, and even do a re-install if
necessary.

As I said too, the problem doesn't happen every time I close out of
something--just maybe about 40 to 50% of the time.

Thanks to you and everyone else for your thoughts on this issue.

I'll read any additional thoughts with interest, even though I won't clutter
up the list with responses to each post.

Tom,

"This is why I think Jaws somehow dies when I close out of another ap."

That would be a very unusual problem. I think you need to check all your
display settings to make sure you're operating in the correct resolution,
theme, and appearance.

The shutdown keystroke for applications (if you don't use file/exit) is
Alt+f4.

As someone else suggested, I agree that a re-install of JAWS may be needed
here. Again I've never heard of a situation where JAWS is unloaded when
another application is unloaded, and I've been using a Dell Latitude 610 for
two years before upgrading.

In your last post, you wrote:

"Assuming Jaws is still alive, alt tab and alt tab back again. Or hold down
the windows key and pres M as in Minerva."

I have tried these steps, but to no avail.

This is why I think Jaws somehow dies when I close out of another ap.

I don't think it's just a focus issue; otherwise, I think I could get Jaws
back as others have suggested.

Assuming Jaws is still alive, alt tab and alt tab back again. Or hold down
the windows key and pres M as in Minerva.

If on the web, you might F5 to refresh the page or insert escape to refresh
the screen.

As suggested, creating a hot key for Jaws should work if it is getting
kilt. Having a hot key for two versions would come in handy.
