I have tried these steps, but to no avail.

This is why I think Jaws somehow dies when I close out of another ap.

I don't think it's just a focus issue;  otherwise, I think I could get Jaws 
back as others have suggested.

Assuming Jaws is still alive, alt tab and alt tab back again. Or hold down
the windows key and pres M as in Minerva.

If on the web, you might F5 to refresh the page or insert escape to refresh
the screen.

As suggested, creating a hot  key for Jaws should work if it is getting
kilt. Having a hot key for two versions would come in handy.
