I believe she was referring to Word reading hard carriage return symbols
(ones that you put in the text when youpress Enter).  You show these, and
other symbols, through Word's Tools > Options menu pull-down.

Once you are in the dialog, you will be in the View page tab dialog.  Then
tab until you get to Paragraph Marks.  Since JAWS is reading the hard
carriage return symbols, the check box will show as being checked.  Press
space bar to uncheck it.  The press Enter to exit the dialog box and back to
your document.  JAWS will no longer say "paragraph mark" because they are no
longer showing.
