One of the most common questions that comes up on the list is regarding
OnMouseOver. I thought you might be interested in reading the updated FAQ
that FS has posted on the support page.

Product Name: JAWS for Windows

Version: 5.0 plus

Category: HTML

Question:

How do I get JAWS to stop speaking OnMouseOver information?

Answer:

HTML allows the author of a page to set an OnMouseOver attribute for
most HTML elements that runs specified code, such as JavaScript or
Visual Basic Script, when a visitor moves the mouse pointer over the
HTML element. Often this is used to momentarily display text, graphics,
or links.

Beginning with version 5.0, JAWS recognizes the OnMouseOver attribute
and, if it is set to display text or links as part of the page, provides
access to that information. This can give you important information
about an HTML page and it is recommended that you do not disable this
feature. However, if you prefer that JAWS not speak OnMouseOver
information, there are several options available. You can silence the
OnMouseOver announcement or assign a sound to the OnMouseOver attribute
announcement. Alternatively, you can temporarily turn off Element
Attribute speech during your current Internet Explorer session, disable
it for a specific Web site, or disable the feature entirely.

To silence the OnMouseOver announcement:

1. Press INSERT+F2, select Configuration Manager, and press ENTER. 2.
Press ALT+S to open the Set Options menu and press M to choose Speech
and Sounds Manager. 3. In the Select Scheme combo box, choose Classic.
4. Press ALT+E to activate the Edit Current Scheme button.

5. Press CTRL+SHIFT+TAB until you move to the HTML tab.

6. Use the arrow keys to select OnMouseOver.

7. Press TAB three times to move to the Text edit box.

8. Press SPACEBAR to replace the existing text with a blank space. 9.
Press TAB until you move to the OK button, then press SPACEBAR. 10.
Press ALT+A to activate the Save Current Scheme As button. 11. Type in a
name that is descriptive, such as "Stop On Mouse Over," then press ENTER
to save the new scheme. When you use this scheme. JAWS will remain
silent when you move to an HTML element that has OnMouseOver attributes.
12. Press ALT+F4 to close the Configuration Manager. Press SPACEBAR on
the Yes button when JAWS asks if you want to save your current settings.

To assign a sound to the OnMouseOver announcement:

7. Press ALT+P to select the Play Sound radio button.

8. Press ALT+W to activate the Select Wave File button. Use the arrow
keys to select a sound file that you want JAWS to play whenever it
encounters an HTML element with the OnMouseOver attribute. Press ENTER
to activate the OK button and close this dialog box. 9. On the HTML tab,
press TAB until you move to the OK button, then press SPACEBAR. 10.
Press ALT+A to activate the Save Current Scheme As button. 11. Type in a
name that is descriptive, such as "Sound On Mouse Over," then press
ENTER to save the new scheme. When you use this scheme, JAWS will play
the sound you selected when you move to an HTML element that has
OnMouseOver attributes. 12. Press ALT+F4 to close the Configuration
Manager. Press SPACEBAR on the Yes button when JAWS asks if you want to
save your current settings.

Note: If you turn off the Element Attribute Announcement option as
instructed in the following procedures, then JAWS will not announce any
element attributes you have specified in your current Speech and Sounds
scheme. For example, if you are using the Classic scheme and you disable
Element Attribute Announcement, JAWS will not announce the OnMouseOver
or OnClick attributes.

To temporarily disable the OnMouseOver announcement, along with other
HTML Element Attribute announcements:

1. While in Internet Explorer, press INSERT+V.

2. Use the arrow keys to select Element Attribute Announcement. 3. Press
SPACEBAR to choose Off.

4. Press ENTER to close the Adjust JAWS Verbosity dialog box.

To disable OnMouseOver announcement, along with other HTML Element
Attribute announcements on a specific Web site, you can use the
Personalized Web Settings feature:

1. Go to the Web page and press INSERT+SHIFT+V

2. Use the arrow keys to select Element Attribute Announcement. 3. Press
SPACEBAR to choose Off.

4. Press ENTER to close the Personalize Settings dialog box.

To completely disable OnMouseOver announcement, along with other HTML
Element Attribute announcements: 1. Press INSERT+F2, select
Configuration Manager, and press ENTER. 2. Press CTRL+SHIFT+D to open
the Default.jcf file. 3. Press ALT+S to open the Set Options menu, then
press H to choose HTML Options. 4. Press CTRL+SHIFT+TAB to move to the
Misc tab. 5. Press ALT+A to move to the Indicate Element Attribute check
box. Press SPACEBAR to clear this check box.

6. Press ENTER to close this dialog box, then press CTRL+S to save your
settings.

7. Press ALT+F4 to close the Configuration Manager.
