Well, as far as I can see if you set the dictionary pronounciation to M 
period  and it says Monsieur, then when ever it encounters M period it will 
say Monsieur and then the next word.  I tried to have it say the word cup in 
a recipe when it came across c period and found that when ever it found a c 
period it would read it as cup and then followed by the next words.  Like in 
the abreviation for C.E.I. it read it as cup . e. i.  I never tried it 
followed by an asterick though so perhaps you might try that but it might 
just read the asterick too!
