I'd love to see one of these documents. I can't believe there isn't a
solution to this, but I can't think of one offhand.

Yes, sorry, I should have mentioned that I've done both those things and 
still get just the text.  I even tried the print preview, and showing the 
ruler and grid lines under toolbars, but nothing changed.
