Marsha,
Give this a try.
You're on your desktop, but icons not speaking.
Press Insert+V
Press the End key.
Press the spacebar.
Arrow up to see if you now have speech turned on.
If you'd prefer to have Narrator running, then before those steps, press
Windows+u.

HiThe icons are on the desktop but Jaws won't read them. It's almost like I
put the jaws to sleep for the desktop.
