MSWord 2003 not reading characters

Would appreciate some help.
When in MSWord 2003 for the most part all works fine. However, in some
documents I can read line by line, but character by character reports
nothing. If I hit jaws + F with PC cursor on it reports mixed fonts mixed
style. Yet, jaws cursor will read character by character and jaws + F
reports a specific fonts size and style.
Is it a settings issue?
