If you do not want to continue sending messages, simply sign out and you will not have a problem. or you can also set yourself to appear offline until you're ready to send messages again.
You can do this in the file menu, under my status.

No, there is not an option in tools > options.
You must bring up the msn messenger menu from the system tray, and hit x for exit.

When you hit Enter on it in system tray, there
should be a context menu with one of the items
being Disable or Exit or something similar. Also,
somewhere there should be an Options or
Preferences where you can address this issue.
