Hi Joseph

My Lenovo laptop is less than a month old. its running on a intel duo core processor 2.0Ghz, 2GB of ram, and running vista premium. I have cleaned out the temp files, and set display to window classic from vista basic. I made a mental calculation. From vista starts to jaws speaks, its more than a minute and half.
I think this is a bit excessive. Think I just have to live with it.

Thanks.
Alvin

Hi Michael, Alvin and list,
According to my own statistical experimentation and simulations, my own Vista Ultimate laptop (which was subject to my own series of podcasts on Vista) has JAWS 9 (and JAWS 8) and exhibits no problems when using Sleep mode. Also, the startup time is between thirty seconds to forty-five seconds after Vista startup.
Here are some clarification to recent email:
* Temp files and Sleep have nothing to do with each other. Essentially, Sleep means that the Vista computer will go to "Standby" where it will respond to keyboard input (or similar input) to wake itself up (same as XP's Standby). * The delayed startup time might be caused by huge amounts of Temp files (go to Start, type cleanmgr, press ENTER and it should open Disk Cleanup). Also, go to Start, type defrag, press ENTER and try defragmenting your hard drive. * It might be due to hardware issues (what is the CPU model and speed? What is the RAM amount?). * Try using Classic visual style (go to Start, type Personalization, go to visual styles (or something similar or Display will be fine) and change the style to Windows Classic and try again). * In this case, don't modify any settings in System ConfigUtility (the location you might want to search would be Startup folder under Start Menu/Programs).
Hope these questions/clarification help you.
Cheers,
Joseph P.S. Everything that I mentioned are in Rick's and my own Vista series of podcasts.

but tech support from freedom scientific told
me that it is not recommended
to use sleep mode when using jaws.

This isn't exactly a solution, but in vista,
use "sleep" instead of
shutdown."
It speeds up the start-up process a great
deal.
I still shut down my machine every couple
days or so because I don't
understand what sleep does with respect to
cleaning up temp files, etc.

Subject: Long wait before jaws speaks

Hi

Running jaws 9 on a laptop running vista
premium.

It takes about 1 minute for jaws to be
loaded after booting up my laptop.
I
could hear vista loaded and then a long
silence before jaws speaks.

I asked my sighted wife to take a look at my
laptop while the laptop is
being booted up. She told me that visually
nothing is happening before
jaws
speaks.

I went into the startup programs list of
MSCONFIG. I saw that jaws is
checked and arranged at the bottom of the
list. Could this be the cause
of
the problem? If yes, how can I move jaws up
the list? If not, can you
please help me as its quite annoying to wait
for a full minute before one
can use the laptop after booting up.

My jaws is set to start automatically at the
window logon. However, as I
am
the only user, there is no such prompt.

Thank you.
Alvin
