The numbers kind of speak for themselves. By the end of this summer, FS will have released 10 versions of JAWS in just 15 years. No wonder there are so many BMWs in the FS parking lot. I'm just a natural-born cynic.

Gerald, So you don't think it's supposed to help you in a situation like this at all? You're supposed to get someone sighted to come click on something inthe error message saying that what has happened (IE has been shut down, forinstance? Or is this all about Jaws itself failing and the error message being about Jaws?) and then you're to exit Jaws with this keystroke combo for no practical reason except so as to create the dump file for FS Tech Support, whereas if you weren't supposed to help them this way, you could exit Jaws normally? And this is all part of their practice of including broken features in eachnew version deliberately in order to legitimize the next release so as to rip you off for another SMA? Sort of the grassy knoll theory of Jaws marketing? If so, they're more clever than we give them credit for when we're out of patience with them, although the cleverness might be better applied to development than to sales strategies. ;:-)----- Original Message ----- From: "Gerald Levy" <bwaylimited@xxxxxxxxxxx>To: <jfw@xxxxxxxxxxxxx> Sent: Tuesday, June 24, 2008 9:46 AM Subject: Re: KillJaws My guess is that Insert + Win + F4 is supposed to be used once you respondto the error message, which may require sighted assistance. This keystroke combination creates a dump file that the geniuses at FS can analyze so thatthey have an excuse to release another new version of JAWS to fix the problem they probably created in the first place.----- Original Message ----- From: "Yardbird" <yardbird@xxxxxxxxxxxxxx>To: <jfw@xxxxxxxxxxxxx> Sent: Tuesday, June 24, 2008 8:50 AM Subject: Re: KillJawsLet me refresh your memory on this, meaning no offense by the expression.First of all, the distinction I was referring to by mentioning XP Home waswhat we found out only yesterday, which is that the executable file recommended by someone as opposed to the kill jaws .bat file is an option only with XP Pro. We found this out when I followed someone's directions and went looking for that file under a designated Windows subfolder only to find it missing on my XP Home computer. That was what I was referring to in that regard.Which takes that approach out of the mix, bringing at least me back to thebatch file that originally caught my notice. Which, if I recall, you'resupposed to put anywhere you like and then create an icon for it using theSend command, and then create a hotkey for that icon that will run the file when you need it. Okay. So now we're back to talking about only the batch file, which I'mguessing is all you're talking about in the first place when you say "killJaws." Correct? The other thing is that if Insert Windows key F4 doesn't avail for exitingJaws in one of these situations where Jaws has fallen silent and there's anerror message dialogue you must respond to and need Jaws to interact with,so you have to exit Jaws in order to restart it, then what's the official purpose of this enhanced version of the standard Insert F4 Jaws exitcommand? What's that Windows key doing in there? When is a person supposedto use that instead of just insert F4? Thanks.----- Original Message ----- From: "Gerald Levy" <bwaylimited@xxxxxxxxxxx>To: <jfw@xxxxxxxxxxxxx> Sent: Tuesday, June 24, 2008 5:07 AM Subject: Re: KillJaws I can't speak for XP home because I have XP Pro. I simply followed theinstructions originally posted by Pat WPL. I have found that Insert + Win+F4 does not always work in JAWS 8.0. The problem is that once you executeInsert + Win + F4 and an error message blocks JAWS from closing, you're pretty much stuck. At least with Kill Jaws, I can close JAWS first and respond to the error message later.----- Original Message ----- From: "Yardbird" <yardbird@xxxxxxxxxxxxxx>To: <jfw@xxxxxxxxxxxxx> Sent: Tuesday, June 24, 2008 7:46 AM Subject: Re: KillJawsI see. So this is all about being able to access an error dialogue having to do with one or another application besides Jaws itself. What do you mean bysaying that Kill Jaws creates an icon on the desktop? In all of this, whatI thought I learned is that first you create a batch file (which is the only option if you're an XP Home person, as I am). Then you yourself create from that new file a desktop icon for which you curate a hotkey. The critical part here is that the kill jaws batch file doesn't itselfcreate a desktop icon, right? You have to do that as part of setting thisup for yourself? Thanks. And again, if there's an emergency key combo offered by Jaws itself, Insert Windows key F4, that will properly unload Jaws even when in a situationwhere Insert F4 alone won't work, why would you need this Kill Jaws setupat all? Not clear about that, yet. Thanks.----- Original Message ----- From: "Gerald Levy" <bwaylimited@xxxxxxxxxxx>To: <jfw@xxxxxxxxxxxxx> Sent: Tuesday, June 24, 2008 4:07 AM Subject: Re: KillJaws Kill Jaws creates an icon on the desktop. You can then access theProperties page and assign a shortcut key, something like Alt + Control +K or whatever. Once you close JAWS, you can restart it using your hot key or Run dialog. Once JAWS is running again, you can respond to the send Error Report message. If you encounter a system crash, you may still have to restart your computer.----- Original Message ----- From: "Yardbird" <yardbird@xxxxxxxxxxxxxx>To: <jfw@xxxxxxxxxxxxx> Sent: Monday, June 23, 2008 6:45 PM Subject: Re: KillJawsGerald, thanks. I'm not sure how often I've been in this exact situation, if ever, but after you and Robert have explained what kind of situation merits theuse of this batch command, I'll try to recognize that kind of situation, and I'll have created a way to run the command. Why do you call it a desktop shortcut? If you mean an icon, that I can understand, though if I were without benefit of speech I'd hope to use a unique first letter for the name of the icon so I could activate it. And if what's meant is actually a hotkey, possibly established in the properties for such a shortcut icon, you wouldn't need to be at the desktop to use it. So do you mean the icon, or do you mean a hotkey? Also, in a crash that includes losing speech, what are you supposed to do once you've executed this batch file? Restart your computer, if an actual system crash is what's happened? Or just restart Jaws? And, not trying to be snarkey, but are the people discussing this able to tell whether it's only Jaws that's failed or if their computer needs rebooting or just one application is shutting down and asking you to send an error message? I can't read those dialogues if speech goes out, but I can tell whether it's just a program that's died on me or the computer's actually hung.thanks. Just trying to figure out exactly what kind of situation this ismeant for.----- Original Message ----- From: "Gerald Levy" <bwaylimited@xxxxxxxxxxx>To: <jfw@xxxxxxxxxxxxx> Sent: Monday, June 23, 2008 3:07 PM Subject: Re: KillJaws Kill Jaws is a desktop shortcut that invokes the XP system utility "taskkill" to forcibly close JAWS after a crash that results in loss of speech. Many times when JAWS crashes, an error message is displayed on screen which blocks JAWS from closing with the normal Insert + F4 command. Kill Jaws eliminates this problem by closing Jaws without having to respond to the error message. To create the shortcut, use the following target address: C:\WINDOWS\system32\taskkill.exe /f /im jfw.exe Hope this helps.----- Original Message ----- From: "Yardbird" <yardbird@xxxxxxxxxxxxxx>To: <jfw@xxxxxxxxxxxxx> Sent: Monday, June 23, 2008 4:25 PM Subject: Re: KillJawsGerald, I must have missed something.
