Dave,
J-Say needs Dragon Dictate, and that combination is an expensive option. If you need hands-free access, you need the Pro version of both, and that is a very expensive option.

T & T Consultancies did have a programme called J-Vist which did exactly
that but by the looks of it it's not been continued. Shame as I might have
actually gone for that myself.

Thanks Gary, that helps a lot. I'm going to try it with another
screenreader that does have some support built in.

Londa,
Do you mean the sentences you are supposed to speak in order to set up the
microphone? I had to use the JAWS cursor to read them since they are not
in an edit field. I don't have a Braille display, but I would suppose
that if you have your display following the PC cursor, you wouldn't be
able to read the sentences.

I'm not really sure just how practical Windows Speech Recognition would
really be without any direct JAWS scripting support. You can hear what
words are being put into MS Word by the program by switching from
highlighted to all with Insert+s, but you sometimes get a lot of extra
speech when other events take place on the screen. The biggest problem is
with the corrections dialog. When you say "correct that" to correct an
error, JAWS won't read the choices in the dialog unless you have JAWS
speaking all text written to the screen. Even then, JAWS doesn't speak
the numbers beside each selection, and you can't get the selections
spelled. If 2 selections sound alike, having them spelled is necessary.

What we really need is scripting support for Windows Speech Recognition. I
thought that Brian Hartgen, the author of J-Say, was going to produce a
less expensive version of his scripts to give us this support, but I
haven't heard any more about the project lately. It's unfortunate that
JAWS doesn't support Windows Speech Recognition because it does work
rather well even without training.

I actually tried to do this a couple of days ago. I couldn't read the
sentences on the screen even with my Braille display. Any ideas?

Cy,
I think someone has already answered your question about starting speech
recognition in Windows 7 by typing speech into the search box on the
Start Menu. I played around with the program a little last night and
was surprised at how well it worked. You need to have a microphone
connected to try it, preferably a headset-microphone combination. I was
using a Logitech H330 USB Headset that was on sale at Amazon recently
for slightly over $20. Its only drawback is that it doesn't have a
volume control on the headset, and music quality isn't as good as other
headsets I've heard. It does work well for voice recognition though.

You will first get a wizard that will set up the microphone for you. I
repeated the 2 sentences displayed on the screen, and the level
apparently was adjusted correctly. On another screen you get the chance
to choose whether you want speech recognition to load at startup and
whether you want to activate it with a voice command or manually. I
chose manually because of my bad experience with a certain
voice-operated clock. You can also activate a Help button to get a list
of useful commands. You're invited to print these out to a reference
card, but virtualizing the window and copying them to the clipboard for
pasting into notepad or Word would probably be more useful. I was also
invited to take a tutorial, but I skipped it since I didn't know how
well it worked with JAWS.

I only had time to do a brief test, but I was surprised that I had no
speech recognition errors. Using some of the suggested commands, I was
able to open and close the Recycle Bin on the Desktop. I then opened
Word and dictated a couple of sentences. Next, I closed Word and said
"Don't Save" when the dialog appeared. That's it! I'll play a little
more when I have the time.

I have also worked with Dragon Dictate with J-Say and JAWS in the past.
The main difference using JAWS with Windows 7 Speech Recognition will be
the lack of automatic feedback and the inability to give JAWS commands
with speech. Making corrections will probably be more difficult as
well.

Speech recognition should be a lot of fun to play with. What else does
an old retired rehab engineer have to do but play?

Hi,
Unless I have missed something I have not seen either how to find the
speech
recognition in W7 or the key combination to get it going.
This really does sound like something I could use.

Hello Friends,
I have a XP-Home machine running JAWS 11 latest, and I would also like
to
know that myself!

I got the feature up and running accidentally and it startled me so
much I
closed it!
LOL!

But I would like to experiment with it!
So if some kind person can tell me how to bring the voice recognition
up in
XP, I would appreciate it!

Hello Friends,
I accidentally hit a key combination the other day, I am using XP-Home
and
JAWS 11.
I swore, before I in panic, did an Alt F4 to shut it, it said
something
about Speech recognition.
Does XP or JAWS 11 have a similar program built in?

Never heard of it before, but, no I did hear it.

Hello there;

has anyone tried the speech recognition program built in windows 7?

I was playing with the program last night.
once I got my microphone setup,
I was able to,
1, speak to my computer, and issue voice commands, such as, go to
desktop, say such things as,
Microsoft word, then jaws would read the icon,
then I would say, enter, and yes?
word would open,
now, I can dictate text, and automatically the text would be on the
screen.
you can open, close save, with your voice.

very interesting.
