Hi Tom, Sorry that none of the suggestions worked. It sounds like a real headache. You said that if you print it, and then scan the printed image, then JAWS reads it fine. This means that on the screen, it visually shows the text. So, I bet the problem is that the PDF is tagged, but that the tags are gibberish. Jaws, by default, will read the information on the tags (instead of reading the physical layout on the screen), because it thinks the author added tags specifically to be accessible. But in reality, the author is probably completely clueless. So, I have a new idea, that I would be very curious as to whether it works. Please do the following... 1. Open the Advanced Menu (ALT + A), arrow to the Accessibility sub-menu, and choose "Change Reading Options" 2. The "Change Reading Options of Current Document" dialog should open. In the drop-down box, change the selection from "Tagged Reading Order", to "Infer Reading Order From Document". 3. Tab to the radio buttons and choose "Read the Entire Document", then hit Enter. 4. Wait for JAWS to recognize the page (may require refreshing hitting INSERT + ESC) 5. If you find that it is not reading it, or reading it in an odd way, go back to the "Change Reading Options" dialog, and try selecting one of the other two options "left-to-right, top-to-bottom reading order" or "use reading order in raw print stream". Hope that works! I tried them, but I did not have any success. I spent 30 or 40 minutes on this tonight. I will have to try again another night. I am going to have a friend look at this pdf on a screen. I am beginning to think that the screen shows garbage also. The "read out loud" feature spoke all garbage characters. Also, the "save as text" feature produced a text file with garbage characters. How odd it is that printing the file produces the correct data. Maybe this is a raster image, and Jaws is not picking that up. The text below is the properties data for this file. I generated it with the Jaws virtualize screen command. -------------------- Document Properties Description Security Fonts Advanced Document Security The document's Security Method restricts what can be done to the document. First of all, I "think" that the problem is either they are using some odd fonts that Jaws cannot recognize. Or, they have tagged the document incorrectly. I usually ask people to send me the pdf for me to try, or to fix, however this pdf obviously includes sensitive info, so that option is out. One thing you can do to learn a little more about the PDF is to open the Properties dialog (CONTROL + D), and see if the PDF is tagged, and what the security settings are. For the long-term, I could help you by contacting the bank and giving them the information they need to give out statements that are accessible with Jaws. But until then, there is a workaround. Although Jaws is not reading your PDF right now, I have a feeling that Acrobat's Read Out Loud tool will work. To use this do the following... 1. Open the View menu (ALT + V), then arrow down to Read Out Loud 2. Choose the first option "Activate Read Out Load" 3. Now you can use the hotkeys for reading the PDF which are... Read this page only (SHIFT + CONTROL + V) Read to end of document (SHIFT + CONTROL + B) Pause (SHIFT + CONTROL + C) Stop (SHIFT + CONTROL + E) 4. Note, you may need to turn off Jaws speech while Read Out Loud is working to avoid two voices. I hope this helps. Please let me know if I can help with getting the bank to make all statements accessible with Jaws. When I open these files with Acrobat, Jaws only reads a lot of odd sounding foreign characters. If I print the pdf and perform OCR scanning on the printouts, the text looks fine. Does anyone have an idea about what is causing this?
