Try this, after you have oened the document go to view and select "normal".
(I presume you are in Word)

My bank offers a web site feature which allows me to download my statements
as pdf files. When I open these files with Acrobat, Jaws only reads a lot
of odd sounding foreign characters. If I print the pdf and perform OCR
scanning on the printouts, the text looks fine. Does anyone have an idea
about what is causing this?
