Debbie, I am working on jaws 5.1 and word 2000 and jjust followed your
instructions. I hope this works, jaws does not read bolded text on this
machine either. Thanks, Judith

I apologize if my instructions were not as complete as they could have been.

My instructions to have JAWS read bolded text were based on JAWS 6.0 in
MSWord. I use Word 2003 at work and Word 2000 at home.

To access the JAWS Scheme dialog box is to press ?alt + insert + S?. The
dialog box opens in a list with ?classic? as the default. I instructed that one
should select ?classic (attributes).

JAWS will acknowledge the bolded text as bold and the italics text as
italics. Attributes includes italics, underline, and bold. To know where these
changes start and end, JAWS will speak the attribute first and then the text.
Because the default in Word is ?normal? when the attribute goes back to the
original, that is without being italics, underline, or bold, JAWS will read
?Normal?.

I left out how to change the settings back to the default in the case you did
not like this option after all. If you find this more confusing than worth
having bold read to you; you can go back into the scheme dialog box and select
?classic?, which is the JAWS default.

Other classic choices where even more information is spoken are:

Classic (attributes, font info., & color)

  Classic with quotes

Now, with my settings on ?attributes?, my JAWS is also reading
?strikethrough?. My ?font? dialog box does not indicate the strikethrough
checkbox as being checked.

If this is not clear, or what you get is not what you expected, please
consult your help for JAWS.

Tip: Before changing a setting, check as to the default or at least what it
is prior to making the change so you can go back and set it back.

  Again, I hope this helps.

  Debbie

    Hi,
I followed these instructions and found myself
     really messed up.

I am sure it must have been my fault and the kind folksat tech support
    couldnot help meo ut.

If you find your key operations nonresponsive, immediately close down JAWS
    6.1 and restart it.
    Everything fixes then.

I am sure the mistake was mine andd this is why I say if in trouble,
close
JAWS before you mess up further settings.
