Ann,
Can you tell us what model Dell laptop you have? Did you inform FS that your sister running the same model laptop had the same issues? This information might help them diagnose the problem.

It sounds like some sort of video incompatibility, and as was mentioned in another message, Vista is supposed to be immune to this type of incompatibility. Obviously, that's not true in every case. The only video component you can change in your laptop is the video driver. You could check with Dell to see if there is a newer one for that model of laptop. Removing all traces of JFW and reinstalling might also be needed. At least that seems to be the preferred solution given by FS to all issues they can't resolve any other way.

Thanks, Chris, but I've had trouble with every version of Jaws on this
particular computer, which I have had since about the middle of November
last year. When I called Freedom Scientific's tech support several months
ago they told me that nobody else was complaining of these problems, so I
feel rather like the lone ranger (smile). Interestingly, my twin sister,
who is also a Jaws user, has the same kind of laptop and the same issues, so
go figure. I have a friend who uses Window Eyes and I downloaded a demo
version to see how it worked on here. It did okay also, but I sure hate to
give up using Jaws since I am so used to it and like it so much. But it
does make me wonder what the quirk is with this particular computer and this
particular screen reader...

So far as I'm aware I'm having little to no issues with the public beta of
JAWS 11. May I ask, have you updated to 11.0.536? Also, have you reported
your findings to Freedom Scientific through their beta report form? I
strongly suggest you do this so that they can hopefully fix them before
final release, which is scheduled for the time Windows 7 is released to the
general public, around October 22. Good luck.

Subject: Jaws not getting along with Vista on my Del Laptop

Hi everyone,

I am new to the list so please forgive me if this topic has been covered
prior to my joining. According to someone I spoke to at Freedom Scientific,
nobody else seems to be having the problem so perhaps not (smile).

I am currently using Jaws 11 Beta to see if it would improve the problem I
am having but if anything, it is worse than 10. Jaws works fine on my XP
desktop computer, but on my Del laptop running Vista I have a terrible time while writing/editing email messages or other documents such as in Microsoft
Works , Notepad, WordPad, etc. Jaws will read lines twice when I am down
arrowing, or it will repeat letters when I am arrowing across the line to
see if something is spelled correctly. I also have trouble selecting words
to delete, etc., because it seems to be on one thing but is actually on
another.

Also, in Windows Mail, it incorrectly reads messages when I am in the list
view of any mailbox, causing me to sometimes delete messages I don't intend to. I love Jaws, but this is most annoying and I am hoping someone has some suggestions for me. My laptop has the numpad on the right-hand side of the
keyboard so I am using the desktop layout since I can use the same keys as
for a desktop.

One more thing...sometimes it appears that the control key or the shift key gets stuck, causing many things to happen that I don't want. When I unload Jaws and load it back, the problem goes away. I have used System Access To go when the annoyance becomes too great, and I don't have the problem at all
with it, although I do like so many things about Jaws better that I would
much rather use it.

My apologies for the length of this post, and I hope I have been clear about
what's going on. Believe me, if anyone else is experiencing...or has
experienced this, they will definitely know what I'm talking about (smile). Any thoughts and/or suggestions are greatly appreciated...thanks in advance.

Ann
