Hmm, It seems to me that in much older versions of JAWS you could
control the volume of the various voices. Anyone remember this? Must
have been in the 3.xx versions or so.

Thanks, I'll give them a try.  I've just been using the standard voices
that 
install.  One thing that Decktalk has over Jaws is the ability to
control 
the volume levels of all the different voice settings.
For example, you can make the keyboard voicequite soft and the reading
voice 
louder.  It's a very nice touch.  When you want to hear the keys you're 
typing, but you don't need them that loud, this is a bvery nice feature.
Why can't eloquence do this?
