Jaws accessible freeware sound recorder that is more functional thanWindows sound recorder

I have been trying to use the standard sound recorder but am rather 
irritated with some of the limitations it has.
Does anyone know of a more accessible freeware sound recorder?  I am 
trying to preserve our tapes and LPs to CD and have slightly shot my 
budget for a while.
