OK so let's say I am running a version of windows targeted at a business or Pro user, but then I want to use JAWS, but do not want any extras, I still have to pay the extra for JAWS Pro as standard will not run.

You say that it is not FS who dictates which version of JAWS you need to run on a given version of windows, but that isn't correct. It is FS who decides whether to allow JAWS to be activated successfully in each version of windows. Windows just identifies which version windows itself is, and the FS programmers dictate the rest.

If someone purchases different versions of windows they do receive more or less of a product depending on the version they pay for, so yes you only get the version which has the functionality the user wants. However I want to be able to use JAWS (just JAWS) as a standard version as I do not need any of the Pro features, and yet I have to pay a premium to do that.

Hi Peter, Ron and list,
This list had a background discussion about this thread about four weeks
ago. The answer at that time was, "it is due to market differentiation."
Just like we have six versions of Vista and five versions of XP, but with
two or three essential markets being targeted, we have the same strategy
here with FS. The "essential markets," then, are these three: consumer/home
use, professional/business and a combination of two/enthusiasts.
Standard/Home versions of Windows, such as XP Home and Vista/7 Home
Basic/Premium, are optimized for home/single-user scenarios, while
pro/business versions including Windows XP Pro and Vista/7 Business (Pro in
7)/Enterprise target corporate/advanced users. Still, enthusiast/top
versions such as XP Tablet PC/Media Center/64-bit and Vista/7 Ultimate
target users who wants to get most out of their computers, such as technical
analysts, multimedia professionals and so forth.
The actual process of authorizing a JAWS version lies with not FS's
practice: rather, it is derived from Winlogin process (Windows Logon service
under Windows kernel) which determines a Windows version. Although FS'
strategy of market differentiation exists, for technical perspective, it is Windows itself that determines which version of JAWS (Standard or Pro) would
be authorized on a given computer.
As for extras, if you don't want it, then that's okay.
Hope it was helpful.
Cheers,
Joseph P.S. Was I too technical for you to understand?

They only manage to get away with it because most JAWS users will be using a

copy of JAWS purchased by governments, charities and other large
organisations that tend to just pay what htey need to. I paid for my own
copy, as did many people and it annoys me like hell that you have to pay
more for the same thing. It's not like any further development has to go in
to making JAWS work on Pro versions of windows.

Nice one mate. Your exactly right. They are taking the piss a little.

My computer adviser who knows a lot about software says, he's never known
a
programme that XP home won't be compatible with.

If they are simply doing it for the money factor, and thinking about the
people they are trying to help, they should be named, mentioned and
discussed.

Regards.

That, in my very humble opinion, is still, to this day, a lousy excuse.
Just because someone else is doing it they should do it? Give me a cotton
pickin' break. Let's be real here. They're charging more for the so
called
Pro version simply because they can, and people and the government
continue
to pay the price.

Actually, this is correct what FS is doing. If MS is asking us to pay more
for "professional" features of Windows, why should FS not follow suit?
There
are no differences between standard and professional, however you can at
least authorize JAWS on any supported version of Windows. Also you can buy
add-ons like Remote Access and the new Tandem Direct.

Subject: Jaws Standard/professional

Hi all.

I have used Jaws Standard since version 6 and it has worked with all
Windows software. And, having trouble with Vista and IE8, have
decided to go back to XP. The XP version I have is professional.

When I tried to download Jaws 10, which I had just paid £110 for an up
grade, it said it was incompatible. Having phoned FS I was informed I
would need to pay another £169 for an upgrade to professional.

I asked what I was paying for, like what differences the professional
version had, but they were a bit uncertain. They merely said it would
work with XP Pro.

Can anyone tell me why this is and what their reasons are? Why are we
paying more for a professional version of Jaws, when it doesn't offer
any extras.

Any comments/thoughts would be appreciated.

Ron
