Okay. Then you are talking about the larger sense of the program window.
That's what I needed to know. A lot of people use a couple of these terms
interchangeably without knowing they're doing so. Thanks.

The alt-space menu is exactly what I'm describing. I've had the problem
occasionally in Outlook here at work, as well as with Juno. Conversely,
it works the other way too. Going from Maximize to Restore can also
clear things up.

I want to get the terms straight, here. There are two ways people seem
to
use the idea of maximize. One is something to do with how a program
runs,
altogether, which I've seen as a choice between "normal" and
"maximized," in
dialogues like the properties dialogue for a program icon. Using Jaws
versions starting with 3.7, I have always allowed every application to
run
in the default mode of normal. To the best of my knowledge, this has
never
been an impediment to Jaws functioning properly; in fact, most of these
years I've retained still enough peripheral vision in my retinas that,
even
if insufficient for the detail work of reading (that's what central
retinal
function is for),and have seen that the "normal" deployment of appls
like
Word and Outlook Express fill the entire screen, from edge to edge, with
nothing extraneous showing that might distract the Jaws focus. So I've
always been a little perplexed about what this consistent Jaws directive
is
about.
In any case, in Outlook Express only, there's one alternative way in
which
someone might use the term maximization, and that is, when you first
open a
message in the Inbox, or first open a new message to begin composing it,
it
opens in a reduced size. I don't mean the Preview size, which a Jaws
user is
encouraged to turn off. Jaws often works fine without enlarging this
message
window to make it fill the entire screen, displacing both the folder
tree
list and files list panes of the Inbox and leaving only the menu line
above
it and the status line beneath it. But when Jaws seems to be balking
when
I'm editing an email in progress, I always use alt space bar x to
enlarge
the message as just described, and then Jaws behaves fine. Note I said
enlarge, not maximize. It's not that I wouldn't consider this maximizing
the
message, but I don't want to confuse what I'm describing with the idea
of
maximizing the entire interface, which is often what Jaws people mean,
or
have been told.
Anyway, sorry to have to go through all that but I worry that it's not
clear
what's being talking about when the word "maximize" comes up while
discussing this specific situation, reading or editing in an Outlook or
Outlook Express message.
Anyway, when this is happening, I do already have my message enlarged,
filling the entire main area of the interface. I hope that's clear. Now,
if
what you mean is to change the way the program runs so that it's
considered
"maximized" in the other way, that's different. As I say, this is how I
understand this stuff. If there's one person who can clearly explain
anything I seem to be misunderstanding about this, and I mean
confidently
and accurately, I'll welcome hearing the explanation.
And if you, Ted, can tell me what you mean by saying you maximize the
window, ie.in other words, which window you're talking about-- the
program
display all in all or just the email message, that will be appreciated.
Thanks. I hope, by the way, that it's understood that to minimize a
program
refers to reducing it to an icon on the task bar while you fill the
screen
either with the desktop or with the interface of another running
application. That isn't a condition under which, sighted or using a
screen
reader, anyone could operate the program. So that has no place in a
discussion of this sort.

I've had it in Juno with various JAWS versions. I usually restore
normal operation by playing around with the screen size. If it's maxed,
I restore it, or vice versa. The change seems to do it good.

I had this problem with earlier versions of Jaws. But, it seemed it was
fixed with Jaws 8. I have the latest update to 8 and haven't had any
problems with writing in OE so far. I sure hope they haven't broken
something they just fixed. It was real frustrating trying to edit
messages
when Jaws would miss things and stop talking.
