there are quite a few open source programs that work well. Most of them come from sourceforge, but not all of them.

Apex dc
http://www.apexdc.net
It is a dc++ direct connect client. If any of you guys have used later versions of dc++, you'll know that it crashes a lot on arrow navigation or hiting the end key in a list, especially when browsing someones file list. This client has managed to fix that, and it runs for days without crashing, and is accessible to boot.
fileZilla
http://filezilla.sf.net
A very nice, accessible ftp client. I haven't tested the server for accessibility in a while, so can't vouch for that.
and of course mozilla firefox and thunderbird
http://www.getfirefox.com
http://www.getthunderbird.com
two nice products from the mozilla foundation. I don't use thunderbird for my email, but it is quite accessible, and a nice alternative to outlook or outlook express. I use firefox almost exclusively because of adblock and the adblock filterset firefox extentions. What's an ad?

I don't find open office very apealing right now. It runs in java and takes up more cpu cycles then any version of office, including 2007 in my experience. It's gotten way better in the accessibility point of view,a nd with the recent anouncement of IBM working in the open office development and mention accessibility as one of there plans, I'll be watching the OpenOffice releases that show up for improvements. For the record, I don't like using a program language that jaws can't handle somewhat natively. There are so many problems with the way jaws interacts with java applications[mouse cursering, anyone?] that I can't quickly use java apps.

Subject: JFW8&Open source applications, what works well?

Hi all, again. I'm in the middle of installing everything after upgrading my system, so I thought I'd take a look at some open source apps. In particular I was looking at OpenOffice. Has anybody gotten this working with JFW? I have the latest JRE installed, the latest AccessBridge, and the latest stable OpenOffice. It sort of works except for the fact that when I load a document in the word processor, the document appears to be completely blank, heh. Has anybody gotten any of the open source things like this to work? OpenOffice, abi-word, etc?

Also, if anybody could recommend any open source apps that work well with jfw, I'd surely appreciate it. I've played with miranda a bit, though I need to look into it some more, but that's about it. I'm sure there are others for all sorts of things that people use.
