Thanks for the advice. I usually try to keep everything else closed when I'm
running MS word or Outlook, and it still happens.

Hi,

I have occasionally run into a similar problem on my system.  When I have it
has been the result of an unrelated application (in my case a PC Callerid
program) posting a dialog box on top of the message I am reading in Outlook
Express or Word.  This seriously confuses JAWS usually causing mis-reads or
partial text reads.  I then Alt+Tab to locate the problem box and close it.
JAWS then continues normally on the message...
