Hi there,The first method works for Windows XP (the method in marenthesis only applies to Vista). Yes, you can indeed uninstall and reinstall internal USB ports (known as hubs). I've done similar "operations" on my internal sound card (Realtech High Definition Audio) and it worked. When Windows restarts, it will look for the devices that are connected to your computer (this includes internal devices such as USB hubs). If it finds that a device has malfunctioned, it will do one of the following: * If it finds suitable driver (known as Miniport driver), it will use this driver to control USB port in question. * If it finds no drivers, then Windows will ask you to install the driver from external media such as CD's (this was common for older hardware). * If it finds nothing suitable, then it will periodically display "Hardware failure/ hardware malfunction" message on the system tray (this message is associated with what's cabbled Microsoft Management Console where you can view properties about your computer and make advanced changes to it including device setup). Why does this matter to JAWS: the auth code is generated from two components: the twenty digit Internet Licence Manager string and your computer's hardware configuration. If a hardware changes occur, the next time you start JAWS, it will ask you to reauthorize because it finds that the auth code is no longer valid (it will think that it is running on new hardware). A cautious warning: you do not really want to tweak with Device Manager unless instructed to do so. This is because, when it is misused, it will bring harmful results, such as malfunctioning devices.
Cheers, Joseph

Thanks Joseph,Is this similar in Windows XP? Also, do I need to have the hub
plugged into
the USB port on the PC or will it let me uninstall the internal
USB ports?
Take care, John

Hi there, Then you might want to reinstall USB hubs. Go to Control Panel/System/Hardware/Device Manager (under Vista, it is ControlPanel/Device Manager). At the Device Manager, press TAB to go to
the tree
view. Press END to go to "Universal Serial Bus Controllers".
Press Right
Arrow to open it. Then press Aplication Key at the item called
"USB Hub"
then press enter on Uninstall. A confirmation message should
appear. Press
Enter on Yes button. Do this for the other USB Hub. Then press
Application
Key again and select "Scan for Hardware Changes." It should
detect the new
USB hub. Cheers, Joseph

I have read
on the internet that a file called usb.inf is generally the
culprit but have
not found out how to repair it. Take care, John

Hi Joseph,I have put the same device on each of the two ports and they both
say the
device is bad and I have tried the same device on another
computer and it is
not bad. What is really odd is that I had a USB hub with a
couple of things
in it when this last occurred and now the hub and all of those
devices are
being denied. I have tried each of them individually in the
other computer
and they are all fine. This is definitely a headache. Take

Hi, Just thought that I'd add to Joseph's message and say that ifyou manuallytab to the system tray from the desktop, these balloons usuallyshow up asbuttons on the system tray and you can activate them with enteror spacebar. You can right click on them by pressing your Applicationskey. HTH,Jeff

Hi there,As soon as you hear the "balloon" sound, press JAWS Key plus F11
then
press ENTER on that balloon. You'll actually have to go to
Device
Manager and see the settings under "USB Hub." Cheers, Joseph

Hello All, I am running into a problem with my usb ports. The only realrelationship toJFW is the fact that I don't know how to use JFW to click themessageballoon, however, the problem is there is a balloon popping upsaying my USBdevice has malfunctioned and if this continues to replace thedevice. Theproblem is that there is nothing wrong with the device because Itried it inthe USB ports on another PC and it is fine. That being said, does anyoneknow how to fix this and does anyone know how to access the popup messageballoons using JFW? Take care, John
