I would take it a step further than checking display resolution. I would get 
rid of any backgrounds and wallpapers, and set the color scheme to Windows 
standard.  I would also make sure that icon and font sizes aren't set 
excessively large.  A while back I went to visit a client who was a low 
partial.  Instead of using Magic or another screen magnifier he'd jacked his 
font sizes up to 48 and was trying to use JAWS.  He got the kinds of reading 
problems described here.  

Just some thoughts.

  A friend is having trouble with JAWS not reading many things on her computer. 
 She is using V7.1, has uninstalled and reinstalled, run the video manager, 
checked resolution, and spoken with FS concerning the problem. Her description

  JAWS won't read text or anything about e-mail messages, though it may work 
briefly after reloading.

  I can only read Word documents going back over a letter or word at a time. 
Otherwise, it just says blank.

  I can sometimes read lists, such as in My documents, but not always.

  I can read everything on websites, just not anything I type in.
