Hi Mike,

Firstly, thanks for submitting your question to the list. It's always good
and really appreciated to see developers do their best to make their
application more accessible. You have submitted a very complicated question
here because we don't know your application, and the code details are not
always easy to understand. I had a situation like this two years ago where
there was an accessibility problem between Jaws and an Agency's Home Made
Application. The application was perfectly designed for the sighted but it
was not accessible with screen readers. I think you did the right thing when
you contacted FS because they could help. Now, you have mentioned
Window-Eyes but you didn't say if you had better results with the labels.
Also, we don't know if you have tested you application with Jaws users.
Assuming your application is designed according to Windows Standards, I
would suggest the following::
1. Have a Jaws user assess the application accessibility. Field names are
very important, but sometimes a few are ignored by Jaws when tabbing or
shift tabbing. However, Jaws cursor might have some success. Here, we don't
want the user to struggle with too many field names by switching and or
routing cursors.
2. Review the application design accordingly, simplify the graphics make-up,
the controls, and re-test it with screen readers.
2. If the application design is very important no matter what, it would be
good to find a Jaws user who could help design a tailored script to access
it.
3. Keep contacting FS for more technical assistance because their feedback
is very important.

Best regards,
Adam

Subject: JAWS and AccessibleName

We are working on an application that could use a little better support on
the JAWS
end. I've submitted this to a couple of the Freedom support folks but
haven't heard
back yet. Might as well get some consensus here....
We've made a lot of progress with WindowEyes but am having problems
with Jaws.

We're working on a product that is to support MSAA. It is an ActiveX
control that runs in the browser. It was built with Microsoft's ATL.
The windowhierarchy looks like:

IEFrame IDX Web Framework - Microsoft Internet
 Shell DocObject View
   Internet Explorer_Server
     ATL:02708808 !
     ATL:0C611368 !
     ATL:02708518 !
     WindowsForms10.Window.8.app16 !
     ATL:6604D5E0
       IDXtermWindow

The IDXtermWindow is the one I am interested in. I have added the
following to the JActiveX.ini file. Most of its presentations are dialog
subforms that the user navigates with TAB and SHIFT-TAB. However,
Jaws does not read the Accessibility Names I have added for my
controls. For example, prior to an edit field, I have a label "Patient": but
have set an Accessibility Name of "Patient Lookup" which Jaws ignores.

What changes can I make to the following to make it work correctly?
Does anyone have a clue as to the solution?

[clsid:B50B4ECE-666C-11D1-8DB2-000000000000]
WindowClass=IDXtermWindow
Description=ICW
StartString=ICW Start
EndString=ICW End
UseFormsMode=0
RenderingLevel=2
MSAAFlags=1

Thanks much,
