I have this problem as well. I use Windows XP Media Center and Office 2003.

JAWS behaves as you described. If you use Insert-B to read the box, it does
read the box, but the numbers it assigns all go to the wrong values. For
instance, it reported Asian words as 41, when there weren't that many words
in the document. There were that many characters.

The only way I could read the box correctly was to turn on the JAWS cursor,
and then arrow through the box. When I did that, Word had calculated the
right values for each category, so it was clearly JAWS misreading them.

Like you, the box used to read automatically, and correctly.

Good catch!

Hi

While we are comparing notes here, has anyone used their word count in
Microsoft word? We downloaded the Jaws 9 update today and on all three
computers we have and found that Jaws will only say Word Count box, Close
button and to activate press space bar. As the cursor is on the close
button pressing the space bar closes the box. If you use tab or arrow keys
it just moves up to the line "Include footnotes and endnotes". On the
laptop putting jaws cursor command on I can arrow and it gives me number
details but not the particulars of those numbers so it is impossible to use
in this way. The original version of Jaws 9 would allow me to have the word
count box read automatically.

The three computers we have: PC running vista home premium with Word in
Office Professional 2007; Laptop running vista business and Word 2000, and a
PC running Windows XP and Office 2000.

To find word count we use Alt T and then W. We would appreciate your
comments to see if you can duplicate.

As a second issue, I was using Office 2007 on the laptop running Vista
Business but with Jaws 9 we were finding on exiting word using Alt + F then
X, a second document was created which then prompted a command of do you
wish to save the second document. This document contained only a line of
text from the original document. After Jonathan suggested using Alt + F4 to
close, the "ghost" second document did not happen. I decided however to use
our old office version word 2000 to avoid this issue and some locking issues
we could not get rid of since using Jaws 9. I have had no locking or no
"ghost" document using Word 2000 and exiting using Alt=F then X, until today
with the latest update installed. It is back to giving me the extra document
in Word 2000 which before was okay. On reading this you will be totally
confused but I can close the document using Alt+F4 and it doesn't happen so
I am not particularly worried, just letting you know that I have had ongoing
issues since Jaws 9 was introduced.

What be interested though if anyone has the word count issue.

Kind Regards
Janine Smith

Hi all, so are you using a version of Windows other than Vista? I ran it
under Vista Home Premium, and that's how I discovered the problems.
