Selecting one of those symbols will place it in the document you are
working on.

Hi All,
Well, the subject pretty much tells you what I want to know.  Why would
one use this feature?  You hit insert and it says, select a symbol to
print, and there's a list of 48 symbols. I'm just curious,  that's all.
