Thanks.  I did understand this from earlier responses.  But in this case, I 
had not aaltered anything at all, not one semicolon.  I simply had moved 
from one version of Jaws to a newer one, and this was detected as a reason 
to get me to recompile the .jss file.

You rewrite the JSS file(source code).
When you compile the source file--(Jss file) it becomes recognizable as code
that the computer understands.
So, when you make changes to the source code and compile or translate it 
into
computer code, the jsb file gets changed, or retranslated or in computer 
jargon,
recompiled. So, It is only the jsb file that is actually getting recompiled
after the text file or source code--jss file has been modified.
