High speed

I have finally decided to make the plunge and switch from dial up to high
speed.
I will change to Charter cable.
I have been following the talk regarding cable vs. D S L and understand not
to get the cable package for Firewall etc.
I have X P and JAWS6.0. I am running the MacAfee anti virus with no
firewall.
My question is,could I use the firewall that comes with X P? Is it easy to
enable
Would I also need a router for any reason?
