I didn't solve it on my own. The solution came from several listers at the
GUI-Talk list, if I recall, not to disrespect anyone here who also had the
right idea but whose post I've forgotten. But it's all right now.

It's amazing how many bad suggestions have been placed for this one issue,
which Joel solved on his own. Two presses of JAWS key+s did the trick, but
the suggestions given ranged from rebooting to shutting down and
restarting to insert+spacebar to pressing insert+a. This is why advice on
these lists needs to be taken with a grain of salt.
