The easy to deal with the Winamp update issue is to turn off your internet connection, either unplug the ethernet cable or turn off the wireless card, start winamp and go to the preferences as noted and uncheck the box that tells it to look for updates. If Winamp cannot reach the internet, it will not go into that freez-up mode. After you alter it, turn the net back on and there won't be a problem.
