Fractions reading as dates

Was this in Excel, or in a table?  It sounds like the cell was formatted as 
a date.  If you're in Excel, select the cell you want to change and go to 
format cells with control-1, control-tab to general--numbers, tab to 
categoryy, arrow to text and hit enter.  Now 1/2 should read one half.
