First of all, I want to be clear that I'm not discussing page numbering
under the Insert menu (Word 2000, thus my mention of menus), though I won't
mind learning if your comment pertains also to page numbering. About the
Different First Page setting, I mean.
But anyway, whenever I create a header in a Word document, I never wish it
to appear on the first page. I always want it to begin on Page 2. Now, and I
have a feeling I learned this back before I ever needed Jaws and many Word
versions ago, so that my understanding may be obsolete but I don't know it,
here's how I achieved that, I think as instructed by Word documentation long
ago. In a manual, as it used to be. I would always create such a header by
first going to the top of Page 2, and only then invoking the Header command
from the View menu, and composing the text and saving the header. I thought
that was how you got it to repeat on every page but not to appear on Page 1.
Is that a really archaic but actual procedure, as I'm guessing?
Finally, let me see if I understand the procedure from what you've said.
First, before doing anything else, you open the Files menu, go to the Page
format dialogue, find the Different First Page option, and check it. Now it
will remain in force forever, applied both to page number from the Insert
Menu as well as to headers and footers,unless unchecked, is that correct?
And then you open the view menu or use a hotkey command (I don't know one,
myself, but just guessing there may be one) and start a header. And you can
be on the very first page of your document, whether or not you wish the
header to actually appear on Page 1. having typed your text, you close the
Header dialogue, and that's that. No header on first page, but otherwise on
every succeeding page.
Is that it? Page Format first, then create the header?

As a professional Microsoft Word trainer who wants to utilize JAWS to
help teach our library patrons to use Word, I have been following this
discussion with great interest. I have not written before about Word
because I am a real beginner at JAWS. Therefore, I know the ins and outs
of Word, but not the JAWS keys to press for them. That being said,
headers and footers, including those for page numbering, are, by
default, repeated on every page of a document unless there is a section
break. Many times people don't want the page number to show on the first
page. The way to eliminate that is to specify Different First Page" in
the Page Setup menu.

This info about the header is not true unless you select the option to
have a different header/footer on second and following pages. By
default, this option is not activated, and so the header repeats on
every page.
