Although I am not sure if this works with Jaws Opera is another alternative.
You can set the preferences to identify itself as IE 6 with the latest
version I had no problems getting into hotmail this way. Although with
Opera version 6 or below some pages didn't like opera still. Opera has a
lot of preferences that allow to set to show text only even with the
buttons. It might be worth looking into.

Even if you can get it to work, you will find that many sites do not work
with it because they insist on ie.

With the many security holes Microsoft Internet Explorer experiences, I've
been advised by an organization that monitors security and scam issues to
no longer use Microsoft Internet Explorer. Firefox has been suggested as a
safer alternative. Has anyone used this, or heard how speech friendly it
is? I'm assuming I'd lose many of the features Jaws offers with IE.
