Good question, Joel. I guess you didn't know this, but at least in my
Windows Vista, and I think I remember that your XP home works the same way,
the Windows Express Files menu is one of those menus whose listed items
change depending upon context. If you have Outlook express, you may be
familiar with this from some of OE's menus, which change in the same way. so
the Search item I've been talking about appears in the Files menu only if
you're in the files list view right-hand pane, but not when you're on the
left, in the folder tree view.
Of course, if you say that your XP Home doesn't display a Search option in
the Files Menu one way or another, I guess I've forgotten that XP Home isn't
like my Vista in this regard. If so, sorry. But hope this helps explain
what I meant.

The items in the file menu are different, based on whether you're in the
TreeView or the ListView. That's just the way it is. I don't make the rules,
I just report them.

No, I'm afraid if you were using Win XP Home you'd find the same thing. I'm
talking about being over on the right side pane in the files list view,
although I don't see why that should matter, and I'll appreciate it if you
can suggest some logic there. Anyway, honestly there isn't any search item,
never mind the access key, because I wouldn't have been exploring that menu
if all I'd done was hit the key to see if it worked. I respect knowing
what's in my menus. Which is why I was puzzled to hear about this, as I've
arrowed up and down that menu as well as others in Windows Explorer many
times and never come across such a thing.
The upside here is that it's fine with me. On the infrequent occasions when
I need to search for a file because I forgot where it is or have never
before seen it, I'm just fine with calling up search from the Start menu or
pressing Control F if I'm in Windows Explorer. I have nothing against the
design and performance of that function. I notice people saying when you
exit that search it takes you out of Windows explroer. It seems to do that
for me, too, but I don't care. I just press the hotkey combo someone gave me
a long time ago and Windows Explorer launches again. I really don't mind.
And the Search function I'm familiar with isn't a waste of time for me, and
not confusing. I couldn't really understand why there was discussion about
how approaching what I suppose is the same function but in a different form
is better than the one I'm familiar with. But in any case, I've just got
what I've got. Which does not include something on the Files menu.
Thanks for the suggestion, though. it would have been interesting to try out
and see for myself just what others said was so cool about it. I might have
used it when it suited my search needs.

Perhaps XP Home doesn't offer this.
Are you in the left treeView pane, or the right listView pane? You need to
be in the right-side listView pane and you should have a file menu option
called search, activated by the letter "E".

I'm using jaws 10 to access this function. I'm using Win XP Home, and
there's no
Search item in the Files menu when I'm in Windows Explorer. Personally, I've
always either put up the Start menu by pressing the Windows key and then,
well, I keep forgetting the single key command to pick it out, although
right now I'm thinking maybe it's the letter C, so I just arrow up until I
come to Search, and then hit Enter. I've never thought the function that
opens its own little window then to be so inconvenient, once I learned my
way around it, a long time ago. And it's even got some Advanced Search
options , which again I don't see as a problem in terms of using the
function, but just a benefit. it works well enough if you know what you need
to type into the search field, and which buttons to click on, and then how
to tab into the results. And how to expand a line in the results if there's
not enough information showing (Windows Explorer, View, details).
maybe the conversation was about Vista, and I missed that because I didn't
open the messages in the thread until recently, just out of belated
curiosity? if so, sorry.
