Highlight the first cell in the column. Hold down control and press space
bar. This will highlight the entire column. Alt-o for the format menu.
Arrow down to column and hit enter. Arrow to width . change the number in
there to the one you want. It may take some experimentation as the numbers
don't appear to correspond to characters. Alternatively, You can type in
what you want despite the fact that it is wider than the column. Repeat the
steps above but instead of width, choose autofit or the like. In this way
the column will expand if you put in a larger entry. Hope this helps.

Subject: Expanding the width of cells in Excel 2003

Hello everyone:

I am using Excel 2003.

I want to create a spreadsheet with four columns.

The first column will contain text data, while the other three columns will
contain numerical data.

My problem is that the default number of characters in a cell is nine, as
far as I know.

I need to expand the first cell of the first column in the table, so that it
can take up to 20 characters of data, for example.

Either I have overlooked or missed something but I cannot seem to be able to
achieve what I want.

Any suggestions will be most welcome.

Sincerely:

Dave Durber
