Epson Smart panel

Hi all,
I just bought an Epson 1660 scanner and can't figure out how to use the smart
panel. I know some of you have bought it and have said it was great and easy
to use, but Jaws won't read anything in the smart panel and treats it as if it
were a picture. When I use the Jaws cursor it changes things and brings
up tool tips. Any help would be appreciated on settings or anything. It seems
to work great if someone sighted uses it.
