One can disabled reading ofgraphical links and change it back again since that is what I have to do sometimes.
The problem is you're trying to get rid of the announcement of a link. One thing I suppose you could do is disable the speaking of graphical links, but I don't think this would be particularly advisable.

Try backspacing through the line to be deleted, or go to the left margin and select it with shift plus end, and delete it. Then you'll have to type in the word you wanted to work with.
