I also do not have things set to spell check as I type.
Those things have created problems for me in the past, so I have disabled
them, and do spell checking and other things manually.

Is it possible that you have your spell checking set to auto, or have the
"Check spelling as you type" checked, or have the grammar-checker running?

Fortunately, I am able to do most of my documents from scratch.
Will definitely check the zoom settings.
I have heard that 100% is the best zoom setting, but I'll try 75 percent to
see if it makes a difference.
I always am sure the screen is maximized, so I don't think that's the
problem.
